Ekta Kapoor should be thanked for this. She had popularized MIHIR VEERANI and his family like anything in the year 2000 -2002. It was quite common for the Parsi Bawa’s to revolt. That brought Honey Irani as director through Armaan etc!! :P… It brought Ehsaan Noorani to join hands with Shankar and Loy… The best contribution from this community, however was…. Boman Irani… :D
He was a famous Theater personality by then. Rahul Da Cunha’s “I am not Bajirao” was the play that brought his acting prowess to the forefront. What happens when two actors are put together and asked to carry the entire weight of a play/movie on their shoulders with just their acting !!!? Well, not much of a show if the ones in question are the typical Bollywood types. But here we had two true blue actors – Boman Irani, and late Sudhir Joshi (a veteran of Marathi plays) who put up an astonishing display of acting skills and comic flair coupled with some smartly penned dialogues. The USP of the play was the extraordinary display of acting talent on stage by both the lead actors especially Boman Irani, who played the Parsi with such finesse that you just can’t stop applauding. This 10 year old play went on to create History by house-packed 1000 odd shows, which continued until Sudhir’s death. A record indeed. Boman was noted by all theater lovers and till date he is remembered for this…!!!! His mom Jeroo Irani vouches for these shows. She has seen this English play over 50 times. She is the one who made him get ready for a role of a life-time, by letting him watch all the movies those were played in Alexandra- movie hall in Mumbai, which was next to his street.
Observing/Acting was a hobby for this typical bawa. Besides spending time in his mom’s parsi style wafers/chips/cookies dukaan, he had massive talent. He was free lance photographer. Some pics he cliked were Better than Dabboo ratnani’s..I told you This Baawa was takin his revenge. Thanks again to Ekta.. J)
Well, same time Bollywood was certainly looking for fresh talent. (Including me) we were fedup with Paresh bhai/Om puri/Nasseer Bhai/Amrish Puri sorta actors. Worst was Bacchan saab playing every role that came to his table. His over-exposure was nauseating. In craze of making money he was signing all the roles. No kidding, he would have taken Samba-kaalia roles as well if it was offered through Sholay those days…
But Upcoming director Rahul Bose had something else in his mind. He got “the BOMAN IRANI’ into silver screen, through his directorial debut “Everybody says I m fine”. All nodded in affirmation… Boman was JUST FINE for the role…. Then came Ramu’s magic. The real talent hunter… He made Boman Play a cameo in a short story of Darna Mana Hai. It was about psychopath Hotelier who hated smoking and didn’t let protagonist Saif smoke for his own reasons… I still remember the Bald Boman in this movie and his nasty smile…
Well, history was supposed to be created. Yet another sindhi wanted this Irani to be famous!! “Rajkumar Hirani” created “Doctor J-dot-C-dot-Asthana…” .. movie was Munnabhai MBBS… who doesn’t remember “boiiifrend bole tohhh…. Hee hee” ECCENTRIC - disgruntled Dean of Medical College with his asthmatic-Hypertension behavior and Laughter club association put him on par with rest of the bollywood veterans… Movie Offers started flowing.
Be it Nattu in Waqt/ Lucky singh of Lage raho/ khuraana of Khosla Ka ghosla/ DCP Desilva of Don/ Manipulative News paper Editor in Page 3/Farokh sethna in “being Cyrus’. All - one better than other-very memorable performances. He did play some serious roles as well. And some utterly pathetic roles too.. :P Sujoy Ghosh tried to dent his career with one movie “Home delivery” though. Even though he has acted as Hrithik’s father in Lakshya, he is barely 45 yrs old and has sons named Danesh and Kayur. He is happily married to Zenobia.
I am decided to get a DVD of “home delivery” during this X’mas vacation… Boman reminds me of Santa Claus in it!!!! :)) After reading this you still think this ad-man, photographer, actor, businessman “IS NOT BOLLYWOOD’S BAAJIRAO”???? :P … infact he would have been sanjay bhansali’s first choice for bajirao if he wasn’t 45. …. Long way to go Mr. Irani…… lage raho lucky singh…….:)))
